4 Meter SOTA and POTA over Christmas 2022

We are in the process of planning another 4 Summits (might be just 3, we'll see what happens) on 4m between Christmas and New Years Day.  The summits will be on the east coast of Ireland in Wicklow and/or Cooley Mountains. So QSO's into GW and north east G will be highly probable, especially on 4m.  The primary event date is Thursday 29th Dec. with Friday 30th as an alternate date.  The weather will be the main factor. We'll post an update soon with summit locations and frequency's More info here too https://wiki.oarc.uk/xmas-elarc-portable-day-2022

International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend 2022

Image
The  East Leinster Amateur Radio Club, operating under the callsign EI0EL, will be activating Wicklow Head Lighthouse IE0026 on Saturday 20 August 2022 as part of the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend.   We will primarily be operating on HF, Phone, in an effort to contact other international lighthouses and lightships. In the spirit of the Club's activities on 4m, we will also be operating on 70.400 Mhz FM, +/- QRM. Coverage and range from this location will likely be somewhat restricted.   We would like to hear from others who are planning on taking part in the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend and will be on the air on Saturday. It would be great to try and organise a QSO., HF on 80m with an antenna in NVIS configuration would be best suited to this

4 Summits On 4 Meters Results

Image
Club members made their way to their allocated summits on Saturday morning. This is the first time some of these summits have been activated on 4m. Ad-hoc check-ins were maintained between members on route via EI2KPR. Tom (EI5IEB) and Johnnie (EI6IPB) setup a portable station on SOTA Ref EI/IE-021 Clermont Carn. The station consisted of a SOTA Beams 6m telescopic mast, Hawkins Viper 5/8 4m rollup flowerpot antenna, Homebrew 15Ah LiFePO4 battery pack and an Anytone AT-588 radio. WX was not great. Rain, low cloud cover with visibility of 20 to 30 meters on the summit. After setting up the station a radio check was carried out. Frank, Dom and Michael all came back reporting 59. We had 15 minutes to spare before the start of the net so used this time to fire up the stove and make a coffee. This nicely complemented the breakfast rolls picked up on route. The net started at 1200 Local Time and continued until 1300 local time. A total of 8 stations called in to the net. The format of the net ...

4 Summits On 4 Meters (70Mhz)

Image
On Saturday 30 July 2022 the East Leinster Amateur Radio Club (ELARC) will be attempting to activate 4 Summits on 4 Meters (70Mhz). In an effort to promote the use of 4 meters the Club would encourage those of you with 4m rigs to listen out for our CQ calls on 70.400 FM We know there are a lot of you out there with ex-PMR (Private Mobile Radio) rigs that have been modified and reprogrammed to operate within our allocation on the 4 meter / 70Mhz band. Many of you may already have off-the-shelf amateur radio rigs that have 4m built-in such as the Kenwood TS 890, Icom IC-7300, and Yaesu FT-847. This is a great opportunity to dust it off and get an antenna up and join us on 4m.  Based on our experiences in broadcasting the IRTS 4M News while operating portable, long-distance contacts can be made. For example, Dublin/Wicklow mountains into both North Anglesey (~160 km) and Sligo (~195km). We would especially be interested in making QSO's with anyone who may be operating portable on 4m o...

4 Meter News Sunnday 1 August 2021 from Kippure

Image
We continued the travelling nature of the station and transmitted from Kippure in the Dublin Wicklow Mountains, Grid IO63ue, SOTA Summit Reference EI/IE-005. Arriving at the base of the summit about 8:45am we re-checked our gear was securely packed and made out way to the top. The weather was dry and overcast. It was pretty windy at the summit so we set the station up in a suitable location and improvised a shelter with a tarp in a effort to limit the wind noise. This also helped with sheltering the stove while brewing the all important coffee. Members of the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue team who were on routine patrol in the area dropped by for a chat and showed great interest in what we doing. We're not sure but it might have been the smell of freshly brewed coffee and chocolate biscuits that piqued their interest. The club would like to thank all callers but especially SWL's and those who get out and operated mobile to call in to the service. A rough map of todays call in...

4 Meter News Sunday 4 July 2021

Image
On Sunday, 4 July 2021, we maintained the traveling nature of the IRTS News 4 Meters News  Station by transmitting from Clermont Carn, Grid IO64UB19. The weather was not great with thick fog and rain, however the great take off in all directions more than made up for this. While setting up Declan, EI6FR, stopped by to say hello before he setup to activate Clermont Carn EI/IE021. Declan setup his station a short distance from the 4m antenna so as to limit any CW interference. Thanks for that Declan, we apricated it. We put out a few calls before the news to make sure everything was working as expected and we were not getting desensed from the towers behind us. Harper, MI5AFK, came back and a we had a brief QSO. He kindly offered to reach out to other local amateurs in the area who also operate on 4m that we would be broadcasting the IRTS news at 1030. Thanks for that Harper and we hope to talk to you again. We had a total of 12 call in's and 1 report via email were received form sta...
