Working with The National Shortwave Listeners Club
By Tom EI5IEB
One of the founding principles of the club is to have fun, build project and to prepare members for the HAREC exam. Over time we have developed training programs covering the theory with practical demonstrations for members and created a number of quiz's as training aids to highlight areas requiring more study.
In the past few months a club, the National Shortwave Listeners Club, (SWL Club) has been setup with the purpose of helping members take and pass the HAREC exam. Meetings are held regularly over Zoom. This is a great step forward in encouraging new people in to the hobby. All courses are led by volunteers who are experienced radio operators, have specialist knowledge and others who are experienced trainers. Having all the knowledge in one place is a great combination.
Two of our club members are also members of the SWL Club and are studying to pass the HAREC exam. Last night, Tuesday 28 April 2021, I was invited to attend a Zoom meeting of the National Shortwave Listeners Club to deliver a mock exam that our clubs training team had prepared to classes Alpha and Bravo. Both classes are still in revision mode in preparation for sitting the HAREC Exam.
This mock exam was held online with the members being presented with their results as soon as they complete it. The purpose here was to help the members identify sections where they may need to brush up on and to boost confidence in what they have learned to date. While also assisting the tutors in identifying area where the classes as a whole could benefit with additional training.
Of the 25 club members that took the exam 16 passed. 5 missed out by a single question. The average pass rate for the HAREC Exam in Ireland for the past few years has been less that 50%. The numbers from last night exceed this and this level of achievement is a testament to the work the tutors and the club members having been putting in. Well done to all.
I look forward to forward to meeting you all virtually again soon to present another mock exam.
